The symbolic meaning of the Aquamarine color blue has a Biblical meaning symbolizing heavenly grace. More than 84 type of gems are described in ancient scriptures. In the Christian era, the Aquamarine was identified with the Apostle, St. Thomas, because it "imitated the sea and the air." The Saint "made long journeys by sea, even to India, to preach salvation." Identifying a specific jewel or Tarshish gem which was one of the Hoshen stones with one of the twelve apostles the gems adorning the ceremonial breastplate worn by the high priest of the ancient Israelites. During the coronation of Napoleon in 1804, the French leader’s ceremonial uniform included cape fasteners inlaid with Aquamarine. The biggest Aquamarine stone ever found weighed in at 45kg and is now known as the Don Pedro Aquamarine. It was found in Brazil in the 1980s and was dropped by the prospectors where it broke into three pieces. One of these pieces became the Dom Pedro Aquamarine and can now be seen as part of the Smithsonian’s National Gem and Mineral Collection. Another museum piece is the roughly 1300-carat faceted aquamarine gem given to Eleanor Roosevelt in 1936 when she and President Franklin Roosevelt visited Brazil. Aquamarine is particularly unique because it is made up of both the rarest and most common minerals found on Earth: Beryl and Beryllium.
